Diamonds have long held the title of "a girl's best friend," and for good reason. Known for their unparalleled hardness on the Mohs scale, where they sit comfortably at a 10, they can cut through glass and withstand the rigors of everyday wear. However, while they may be the hardest known natural material, diamonds are not indestructible. Just like any other material, they have their Achilles' heel.
It's a common misconception that hardness equates to indestructibility. Hardness refers to a diamond's ability to resist scratches, but when it comes to toughness—the ability to resist breaking or chipping—the story takes a different turn. Diamonds, in fact, have what is known as cleavage planes. These are natural lines of weakness where the atomic bonds within the crystal structure are not as robust. A well-aimed blow or a sudden impact at just the right angle can indeed cause a diamond to crack or even break.
I remember once, while shopping for jewelry, the jeweler, an elderly gentleman with an eye for detail, explained the importance of mounting a diamond properly. "A good setting can protect a diamond's vulnerable points," he said, illustrating how prongs and bezels can act like a fortress for the stone, especially in pieces that are worn often or exposed to potential knocks.
Beyond the physical attributes, diamonds carry a wealth of symbolism and emotional weight. They are often synonymous with love and commitment, milestones and achievements. This cultural significance adds another layer of tragedy to the thought of a diamond cracking.
