Signs Hes About to Propose

Signs Hes About to Propose

Sometime around last summer, my friend Amanda started noticing little shifts in her boyfriend Jake's behavior. It wasn’t like they were fighting or anything; in fact, it was quite the opposite. Jake started doing these quirky, yet endearing things that caught Amanda's attention. As someone who's already walked down the aisle, she came to me with one question: "Is Jake about to propose?" Having gone through the same guessing game with my now-husband, I spotted the signs immediately.

First thing Amanda noticed was how Jake suddenly became interested in her jewelry preferences. He started asking questions like, “Do you like silver or gold better?” or “Which of your rings fits you the best?” Amanda thought he might just be curious or maybe contemplating a gift. But looking back, I remember my own husband’s odd fascination with my ring size months before he popped the question. Even the most oblivious guy knows that choosing the right engagement ring is a big deal, and any detective work in this area is a major hint.

Another thing Amanda found odd was Jake’s sudden enthusiasm for family events. He’d always been sociable enough, but now he was contacting her family to arrange a surprise visit or asking detailed questions about her dad’s favorite whiskey. It reminded me of the time my husband went fishing with my dad, albeit he hated fishing. Looking back, his enthusiasm wasn’t about bonding over bait—but gaining permission to propose.

Then there was the mysterious shift in financial behavior. Jake suddenly became “financially responsible.” He started saving, cutting back on spontaneous weekend trips, and even passed up the latest gaming console. Amanda was initially worried there might be a problem at work or that Jake was secretly dreaming of a sports car. But when you're about to drop a significant chunk of savings on a ring and possibly a wedding, financial prudence becomes a priority.

And let’s not forget the social media cleanse. No, Jake didn’t deactivate his accounts, but he did gradually clean up his profiles. Gone were the bro-night pics and in came more couple-centric photos featuring Amanda. I've seen this shift happen with my guy friends—they start subtly curating their social persona to put their best foot forward, almost like they’re preparing for something big.

These moments blend into everyday life so seamlessly that they might be brushed off as coincidences if you’re not paying attention. Of course, every relationship is unique, and not every guy will follow the same script. But next time your partner slips into detective mode about jewelry, takes your dad out to bond over sports, starts saving like a squirrel in autumn, or revamps his online image—perhaps he's not preparing for a marathon; maybe he’s rehearsing for a proposal.

In the end, it’s about those little shifts in behavior that, as Amanda discovered, danced around the question waiting to be asked. Sometimes, the moments leading up to a proposal resonate with hints and whispers that are as exciting as the proposal itself. And honestly, spotting those signs can be just as thrilling as saying “yes.”
