What Are Man Made Diamonds

The first time I heard of man made diamonds, I was a bit skeptical, as I imagine many people might be. My mental image of them conjured up something akin to the cubic zirconia gems I had seen in costume jewelry. It turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Man made diamonds, also known as lab-grown or synthetic diamonds, are chemically and physically identical to the naturally occurring ones. The difference lies in the genesis—one formed over eons in the earth’s mantle, the other in a lab in a matter of weeks.

On a recent trip to a jewelry studio in downtown Vancouver, I had the chance to handle a few pieces with these synthetic gems. The stones were mesmerizing, with a sparkle as vibrant as any finely cut natural diamond. The jeweler, an enthusiastic expert on all things gemological, explained that these diamonds are created using two primary methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both techniques simulate the natural processes but at a much-accelerated pace. The result is every bit as stunning as nature’s own handiwork.

Beyond their creation, though, lab-grown diamonds carry significant implications for both the environment and the market. Traditional diamond mining has long been associated with environmental degradation and ethical concerns. In contrast, man made diamonds present a more sustainable and ethical alternative. There's a growing shift, especially among younger buyers, toward these lab-grown stones due to their smaller carbon footprint and assurance of conflict-free origins.

I started thinking about a gift for my niece, who is an avid environmentalist. She’s turning eighteen soon, and a piece of jewelry with a lab-grown diamond feels like a perfect balance—elegant yet aligned with her values. There’s a certain satisfaction in choosing a product that reflects social consciousness without compromising on beauty or quality.

There's also the matter of price. Generally, man made diamonds tend to be significantly less expensive than their mined counterparts, which opens doors for those who desire the brilliance of a diamond but balk at the steep price tag. This inclusivity in pricing could democratize access to high-end jewelry, a thought that's quite appealing.

Thinking back to the jewelry studio, I recalled how the jeweler brought out a small booklet showcasing the various styles available with synthetic diamonds. It was remarkable to see the level of craftsmanship dedicated to these stones. Some of the designs were conventional, while others pushed the boundaries of what you'd expect in standard diamond settings, perhaps a nod to the innovation that birthed them.

As I left the studio, I couldn’t help but smile. The world of jewels, like many things in life, is evolving. While the traditional allure of mined diamonds remains strong, man made diamonds offer an enticing and responsible choice for the modern consumer. Whether it's their ethical appeal, affordability, or simply the sheer innovation behind them, these stones are certainly carving out their niche in today’s jewelry market. And I, for one, am intrigued to see where this sparkling revolution leads.
